Biography

On June 13, 1986, Ashley Fuller Olsen was born in Sherman Oaks, California to Jarnette Olsen-Fuller and Dave Olsen. Ashley already had a 2-year-old brother named Trent, born May 6, 1984, when she came into the world, but it wouldn't be long before she had a sister. Fraternal twin sister Mary-Kate Olsen was born just two minutes later! Dave was a mortgage banker and Jarnette was a former ballet dancer. Mary-Kate and Ashley's younger sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) was born three years later, on February 16, 1989.

Early in their lives, it was easy to see that the twins were destined for stardom. They were cast for the role of Michelle Elizabeth Tanner on the sitcom Full House when they were only nine months old. They were chosen because they were the only twins at the audition who didn't cry. Mary-Kate and Ashley shared the role because child labor laws demanded that a pair of twins play the part. The show premiered in 1987 and didn't do well in its first season. It was almost cancelled, but was saved when ABC decided to spend a little more time working with it. The show became a hit the next season and was very popular until it was cancelled in 1995.

The twins filmed three movies during the show. It began with To Grandmother's House We Go in 1992, which was followed by Double, Double, Toil and Trouble in 1993 and How the West Was Fun in 1994. Toward the end of the show, many episodes were focused on Michelle. Mary-Kate and Ashley's dad arranged for the twins to get better payment. Robert Thorne, an attorney who specialized in show-business, took care of things. He recognized the twins' potential and created a company called Dualstar for them. Full House was cancelled in 1995, and everyone assumed that this would be the end of Mary-Kate and Ashley's careers.

Contrary to the popular belief that their careers would be over, just the opposite happened. The same year that Full House was cancelled, Ashley and Mary-Kate starred in their first big-screen movie, It Takes Two. The movie also starred Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenburg. During the next three years, Mary-Kate and Ashley starred in two hit video series made by Dualstar, The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley and You're Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley's. The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley was a series in which the twins were detectives and traveled all over the country solving crimes for people. You're Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley's was a series of videos about different parties that the twins planned.

1995 brought more than the end of Full House and a change of pace in Mary-Kate and Ashley's careers. Their parents also divorced that year. Dave remarried soon after the divorce to McKenzie Taylor. Ashley felt that her mother needed her more than her father did, and she didn't attend the wedding. Mary-Kate did. Dave and McKenzie have two children together, a daughter named Taylor and a son named Jake. These are Mary-Kate and Ashley's half-siblings.

In 1998, Mary-Kate and Ashley were in a short lived series called Two of a Kind. The characters was exaggerated versions of Mary-Kate's and Ashley's own personalities. The TV show was cancelled after one season, but it was the start of a new chapter in the twins' careers. Ashley and Mary-Kate have rapidly been filming many direct-to-video movies since Two of a Kind was cancelled. The twins currently star in a TV show called So Little Time, and they do voices for their new cartoon series, Mary-Kate and Ashley in Action. However, it has recently been announced that this will be So Little Time's last season so that the twins can focus more on making better movies. Their newest movie, When In Rome, was recently released, and the girls plan to film another direct-to-video movie in the South Pacific before directing their careers toward the big screen; they are planning a movie to be released in theaters.
